Expert Reviews

Dr. Bruce Perrault, Ph.D, (Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), USA)

Cobalt Sulphide Nanoparticles precipitate when aqueous solutions of cobalt(II) ions are treated with hydrogen sulfide. This reaction is useful in the purification of cobalt from its ores as well as in qualitative inorganic analysis. The sulfides of cobalt are black, semiconducting, insoluble in water, and nonstoichiometric. They react with strong acids to release hydrogen sulfide gas again. They are weak reducing agents and can be oxidized to cobalt sulfate.

Cobalt Sulphide Nanoparticles is a moderately water and acid soluble Cobalt source for uses compatible with sulfates. Sulfate compounds are salts or esters of sulfuric acid formed by replacing one or both of the hydrogens with a metal. Most metal sulfate compounds are readily soluble in water for uses such as water treatment, unlike fluorides and oxides which tend to be insoluble. Organ metallic forms are soluble in organic solutions and sometimes in both aqueous and organic solutions. Metallic ions can also be dispersed utilizing suspended or coated nanoparticles and deposited utilizing sputtering targets and evaporation materials for uses such as solar energy materials and fuel cells.

Cobalt Sulphide Nanoparticles is fairiy complex containing Co4S3, Co9S8, CoS, C3Os4 & CoS2 phases. CoS nanocrysyals are grows on grapheme hydrpthermally starting with thioacetatamide as the sulfur sourcefor supercapactior application. High electrical conductivity is many cobalt sulfide phase has made these materials ideal for many energy devices like dye sensitizedb solar cells (DSC), Li-batteries & supercapactiors.

Cobalt Sulphide Nanoparticles heptahydrate is available from several companies as pink-to-dark-red crystals in purities of 90- 100% . red-pink crystals contains a minimum of 20.8% cobalt and small amounts of impurities (iron, 0.005% max; copper, 0.002% max; water insolubles, 0.05%). The monohydrate is available as pink-to-red crystals with a minimum of 33% cobalt and with small amounts of impurities (iron, 0.007% max; copper, 0.003% max; water insolubles, 0.1% max; Shepherd), and with a purity of 100%. Cobalt sulfate is also available commercially as a rose-to-dark-red aqueous solution containing approximately 8% cobalt.
