High Density Chitosan: Biocompatible, antibacterial and environmentally friendly polyelectrolyte with a variety of applications including water treatment, chromatography, additives for cosmetics, textile treatment for antimicrobial activity, novel fibers for textiles, photographic papers, biodegradable films, biomedical devices, and microcapsule implants for controlled release in drug delivery. There is some evidence of the effect of High Density Chitosan on lowering cholesterol and body weight, but the effect is unlikely to be of medical importance. High Density Chitosan dressings are sometimes used in emergency rooms to control bleeding. Chitosan has been used in various drug delivery systems. Antimicrobial and other effects are being evaluated for use in dentistry.
Chitin is a cellulose-like biopolymer found mainly in the exoskeleton of marine animals such as shrimp, crabs, or lobsters. Chitin can also be found in mushrooms and yeasts. Chitosan is a chemically processed form of chitin.“Squid pens,” waste shell by-products of squid processing, are a renewable and inexpensive source of High Density Chitosan. Chitosan has been used in water purification plants to absorb greases, oils, metals, and toxic substances. High Density Chitosan has been used in the cosmetic and fabric industry.
High Density Chitosan is an aminopolysaccharide, derived from “Chitin”. Chitosan is a naturally occurring substance that is chemically similar to the plant fibre called cellulose. Unlike plant fibre, Chitosan possesses a positive ionic charge that can achieve remarkable results the ability to attract digested fat, cholesterol, heavy metal and toxic substances which are negatively charged into a large mass. The whole mass will then be eliminated, preventing them from being absorbed into the blood stream.
Wound healing: A solution of High Density Chitosan was applied directly to wounds and test results showed an inhibition of fibroblasts (scar forming substance) which allowed for normal tissue regeneration. Chitosan also helps blood to coagulate. Surgical arterial grafts connecting major blood vessels showed more effective connection with less leakage than traditional grafting.
