Quartz, the most common of all minerals is composed of silicon dioxide, or silica, SiO2. in the field of coatings and fillers: quartz powder with good scattering and extinction effect, and relatively low density, brightness up to 92–95, and bright color, will be substituted in industrial applications instead of traditional reflective glass beads and used in paint where the skid resistance has been greatly improved.
Quartz crystals exhibit a property called the piezoelectric effect—that is, they produce an electric voltage when pressurized along certain directions of the crystal. Quartz also rotates the plane of polarized light and is used in polarizing microscopes. In casting industry, quartz powder would be used as an additive and flux to reduce shrinkage ratio of cast during cooling, and the use of high silicon content of quartz powder to produce silicon alloy in metal smelting.
The Superfine quartz powder has unique physical and chemical properties and play significant role in many areas. Its high temperature resistance, small thermal expansion coefficient, highly insulated, corrosion resistance, piezoelectric effect, resonance effect and the unique optical properties, is a prominent role in many high-tech products, especially in aviation, aerospace, electronics, machinery and IT industries.
The Superfine quartz powder have following characteristics: significantly improved resistance performances of compressive, flexural, impermeability, corrosion, impact and abrasion. With water retention, to prevent segregation, bleeding, significantly reduced the resistance of concrete pumping. It improves the compactness of castable refractory materials. When coexist with the Al2O3, easier to be mullite and achieve high temperature strength, strong thermal shock resistance.
Quartz powder is used in the nylon casting, resin casting industrial production, often using superfine quartz powder to reduce the cooling casting shrinkage ratio; ultra-fine silica powder added in nylon and all resin systems, can reduce the shrinkage ratio of the resin during cooling.
