The standard primary ingredient included in most powders that are referred to as “mineral makeup. The claim for bismuth oxychloride is that it is all-natural and better for skin than talc. In fact, in many ways talc is a more natural, unadulterated, pure ingredient than bismuth oxychloride. It’s used in cosmetics because it has a distinct shimmery, pearlescent appearance and a fine white powder texture that adheres well to skin. Bismuth oxychloride is heavier than talc.  Pure bismuth is a naturally occurring, grayish-white powder. It and its derivatives are used as skin protectives, thickeners, and absorbent agents.

Functions as a colorant, adding a white pigment to cosmetic products. It’s frequently contained in makeup because it provides good slip, a silky feel and an excellent dermal adhesion that enables makeup to stay on the skin for long periods of time. This glow serves several aesthetic purposes because, by reflecting light away from the skin, it helps camouflage wrinkles and age spots. This ingredient also functions as a bulking agent for liquid formulations. Products such as blush, powder foundation, eyeshadow, bronzer, lipstick and nail polish.

Nanoshel’s Bismuth Oxychloride is an inorganic white pigment. In the periodic table of elements, plain old bismuth with an atomic number of 83. The symbol is Bi. It neighbors lead, tin, antimony and polonium on the periodic table. Heavy Metals. Bismuth does occur naturally in the earth, but in very small amounts. Bismuth without refinement is not safe for use in cosmetics.

Nanoshel’s Bismuth Oxychloride it is further refined through several stages to remove dangerous elements like lead. Then it is chlorinated, which gives us bismuth chloride (BiCl3). In this stage it still poses a dangerous risk, smelling of  hydrochloric acid. When bismuth chloride is combined with water, it decomposes and part of the chlorine is replaced by oxygen from the water. This process is called hydrolysis and the end result is Bismuth Oxychloride.

Nanoshel’s Bismuth Oxychloride is found in a lot of mineral makeup because it imparts a shimmery and pearlescent glow. It is found in foundations, eyeshadows and lipsticks among others. Bismuth oxychloride improves adhesion to the skin and is oil absorbent. It is also a great texturizer, it imparts a very silky feeling to the powder. It is also an anti-bacterial ingredient so if it is be added to makeup that has botanical ingredients (starches, extracts ) it can help prolong it’s shelf life. Bismuth oxychloride occurs in nature although not a lot.  The bismuth oxychloride used in cosmetics.
