Nickel powder is a silvery-white, hard, malleable, and ductile metal. It is of the iron group and it is a fairly good conductor of heat and electricity. In its familiar compounds, nickel is bivalent, although it assumes other valences and it also forms a number of complex compounds. Mostly nickel compounds exhibit blue or green.
The nickel powder uses in the preparation of alloys. Nickel alloys are characterized by ductility, strength, and resistance to corrosion and heat. Nickel is easy to work and can be converted into a wire. It resists corrosion even at high temperatures due to this it is utilized in gas turbines and rocket engines.
Nickel powder is also utilized in electrically resistive, magnetic and different types of alloys, for example, nickel silver. It slowly dissolves in dilute acids however, like iron, it becomes passive when treated with nitric acid. Monel is an alloy of nickel and copper which is not only hard however can resist corrosion by seawater, so that it is ideal for propeller shaft in boats and desalination plants.
Nickel powder steel is employed for armor plating. It is utilized in batteries, involving rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries and nickel-metal hydride batteries applied in hybrid vehicles. In the past, Nickel has used in coins. It is also employed as a catalyst for hydrogenating vegetable oils. With the addition of nickel to glass gives it a green color. In addition, it is also used for low levels of healthy red blood cells (anemia) due to iron deficiency and treating weak and brittle bones (osteoporosis), however, there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.
Nickel coatings primarily introduce to electroplated nickel, which is utilized to provide hard-wearing decorative and engineering coatings as 'nickel-plating', 'electroless nickel coating' or 'electroforming'. Traditionally, nickel powder has been employed to make jewelry such as earrings. It is used for preventing nickel levels in the blood from getting too low (nickel deficiency).
