Manganese powder is a pinkish-gray, chemically active element and it is a hard metal. It is also very brittle. It is hard to melt, however easily oxidized. Pure manganese is reactive, and it will burn in oxygen when it is in powder form. It also reacts with water (it rusts like iron) and dissolves in dilute acids. Manganese is highly utilized in iron and steel production.

Manganese powder is employed to decolorize glass and make violet-colored glass. Other compounds of manganese such as Manganese oxide (MnO) and manganese carbonate (MnCO₃) have attractive applications: the first utilized in fertilizers and ceramics, the second is the starting material for making other manganese compounds.

Manganese powder is applied as a rubber additive, as a catalyst and to decolorize glass that is colored green by iron impurities. Manganese sulfate is employed to make a fungicide. Oxide of manganese (II) is a powerful oxidizing agent and is utilized in quantitative analysis. Manganese is a key component of low-cost stainless steel formulations and certain widely employed aluminum alloys.

Manganese powder is probably the most versatile element. It can be added to copper alloys. Small additions of manganese are utilized to deoxidize the alloy and enhance its castability and mechanical strength. With the addition of Manganese to gold, silver, bismuth, etc., to produce alloys that are utilized for very specific applications. This is generally related to the electronic industry. 

Manganese powder: The most important non-metallurgical application of manganese is in the form of manganese dioxide, which is applied as a depolarizer in dry-cell batteries. The manganese dioxide is worked as an oxidizer in batteries, it oxidizes the hydrogen and forms water. Manganese compounds have been utilized in many chemical fields. For example, permanganate is a powerful oxidizing agent and is used in medicine. Potassium permanganate is applied to purify drinking water and treat wastewater. It is also utilized as a disinfectant for treating skin disease.
