Platinum dispersion is a lustrous silvery-white, malleable and ductile metal. It is a member of group 10 of the periodic table of the elements. It has the third-highest density element. Platinum dispersion is unaffected by air. It is utilized as resistant as gold to corrosion and tarnishing. Indeed, platinum will not oxidize in air.
Platinum dispersion has a coefficient of expansion almost equal to the soda-lime-silica glass. Therefore, it is employed to make sealed electrodes in glass systems. In the presence of platinum wire, hydrogen and oxygen gas mixtures explode. Platinum dispersion has many applications such as its wear- and tarnish-resistance characteristics are well-suited for making fine jewelry.
Platinum and its alloys are utilized in surgical tools, electrical resistance wires, laboratory utensils, and electrical contact points. Platinum dispersion is utilized as a catalyst in the catalytic converter and also it is employed as an optional component of the gasoline-fuelled automobile exhaust system. The largest use of platinum is for jewelry.
